The story of Our Lady of Perpetual Help dates back to 1495, when her Byzantine icon was stolen from a Cretan monastery by a wine merchant and brought to the Church of St. Matthew in Rome. It remained there 300 years, even surviving the complete destruction of the church by Napoleon in 1798. Eighty-eight years later it was given to the Redemptorists as its custodians and placed in the Church of St. Alphonsus, where it remains today. In the icon, Mary comforts the Christ child as he turns from Archangels Michael and Gabriel, who brandish the instruments of His Passion.
