Our Lady, Star of the Sea

Who is the Star of the Sea?

Also known as Stella Maris, this is an ancient title for the Blessed Mother, used as early as the 5th century. Traditionally, sailors, fishermen, and other “people of the sea” have called upon Stella Maris for protection in their endeavors at sea.

But why is Mary called the Star of the sea?

In his Apostolic Letter on Stella Maris, Pope St. John Paul II encouraged seafarers to ask for Our Lady’s intercession since—just as how the North Star can point us in the right direction—Mary leads us to her Son, Jesus Christ, whose voice calmed the sea for His disciples.

Furthermore, the Blessed Mother is often adorned with stars. Many Marian images feature stars on Our Lady’s dresses, mantles, and crowns. The Miraculous Medal features twelve stars that represent both the twelve Apostles and the passage in Revelation 12:1, which reads, “And a great portent appeared in heaven, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars.

The ocean is one of the greatest wonders of creation because it is so vast and deep beyond our comprehension, just as God’s power and mercy is beyond our understanding.

This Stella Maris Brave Beads Tenner Rosary is made in honor of Our Lady, Star of the Sea. Its blue-green gemstone beads and sand-colored paracord reflect the sea and its wonders.

Clip this special tenner to your backpack, purse, or jacket to carry with you on all of your adventures at sea or on land—and remember to ask Stella Maris to keep you safe and always lead you to Jesus Christ.
